608 Harbor Road Captain Jeremiah Sturges House
Southport, Connecticut
B/w post card. This house was built in the early 19th century for Capt Jeremiah Sturges. Capt Sturges was in charge of the Mill River Fencibles during the War of 1812; he secured a post office for Southport, acted as superintendent of the breakwater for the U S Gov't--in general was one of the most important men in the village. Dr Abram B Sturges was a direct descendant of Capt Jeremiah. The 1906 picture shows the house with its facade remodelled to late 19th century taste.
