SNET built a telephone exchange at 35 Rose Hill Rd in 1912. Frank Craven, electrical engineer, wired the exchange. This postcard photo in an album of Craven descendants is believed to show a typical early telephone exchange, not the one at 35 Rose Hill Rd. The late Edward T. Gerrity of Westport, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a SNET employee familiar with the Southport Exchange, said that there the switchboard ran down the center of the room and that it was a 6-position board. This photo of a somewhat larger installation differently arranged very likely shows a telephone office which Frank Craven had wired. (V.L. Higgins 8/2000)
